Franchising is one
of the most popular business models today.
It has many benefits to assist in the growth
of a business, and the structures of it
are vital to its success. If those are
not detailed in the early stages, with
sufficient flexibility to improve the systems
in the future a business can be put at
risk unnecessarily. If you are expecting
people to invest in your business by
buying a franchise, it needs to have the
solid backing and structure to satisfy
the potential purchaser and their advisers.
Not all businesses lend themselves to a franchise
model. Some may be better having company owned
and managed outlets, others operating a license
and others under the Franchise model.
Which suits your business best is often a matter
of personal preference and how you see your involvement
going forward.

options and put together a plan to go forward.
The
process of building a solid franchise system
is not limited to the hands on professional
assistance and advice I give, but involving
accountants and solicitors that have that
"franchising knowledge". Understanding
how a franchise works is vital to getting
the
right advice from an Accountant or Solicitor.
Well presented documentation, systems,
business
plans and budgets are essential when seeking
the support of your bank.

"After 21 years in the New Zealand Police
I ventured into the Franchise Industry. My
wife Trudy and I bought a Master Franchise
which we operated for the first 3 to 4 months
as a Franchisee, then we concentrated on
our Master Franchise. Between 1994 and early
1999 we set up 18 Franchises in Dunedin City
and surrounds as well as Master Franchises
in Invercargill, Gore, Central Otago and
Queenstown Lakes. We then assisted those
Masters with the establishment of a further
12 Franchises.
In
1999 the opportunity arose to "buy the
whole Company". We did that and became
the Franchisor of Mr Green Home Services.
From when we purchased
the Business until we sold it in May 2006,
we grew the Business by over 80% and increased
its income at all levels by almost 100%,
making it the eighth largest Franchise in
New Zealand. Our policy was always to put
our Franchisees first and to make every effort
to achieve
that. During the time we owned Mr Green,
we were directly involved in the sale and
resale
of over 80 Franchise Movements."
